Running Start Program Information

Running Start Seniors, Culminating Project and Advisory

Running Start is a Washington State tax-funded program that allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in tuition-free community college courses. Students who choose to participate in the Running Start program should keep informed of PTHS opportunities (ie events, activities, scholarships, etc.) and responsibilities (ie deadlines, requirements, etc.) by watching this website.

High School Assessments - Running Start students who intend to earn a high school diploma must pass required Washington State competency exams. These exams are given at Port Townsend High School. The dates are listed in the PTSD calendar and posted on the PTHS website. Please contact your high school counselor if you have questions about testing requirements.

Running Start students must complete a Culminating Project as part of their graduation requirements. This project is coordinated through the Contemporary World Problems course (CWP) at PTHS. Students who are not enrolled in this course must attend the special culminating project class held during the year.

Registration Procedures

Students new to the Running Start program will need to take the AccuplacerTest. Information and scheduling of the test can be obtained at Peninsula College (385-4605).

After successful completion of the Accuplacer Test, new students should schedule an appointment with their PTHS counselor to obtain a Planning Form and Enrollment Verification Form. These forms outline the courses that students will need to complete in order to graduate from PTHS and which courses will be completed at PTHS. These forms, signed by PTHS, the student and parents, are required before registering at Peninsula College.
