Update on Senior Culminating Project for the Class of 2021!

22 January 2021

Dear Seniors,

In September, I asked you to proceed with the first two components of the senior project (proposal and research/bibliography) with the promise that we would make a determination in January, about whether or not the project and presentation would happen.

We have been hearing a lot about the amount of stress that all students are dealing with this year, as you work to navigate through the impact of Covid on your education, and other aspects of your life.  We know that seniors have the additional stress of post high school planning, and that many of you may be feeling overwhelmed by the senior project requirements.  Therefore, during the school board meeting on January 21, the board approved a waiver for the Senior Culminating Project, for the graduating class of 2021.  This means that you can stop working on your senior project, as it is no longer a graduation requirement for this year's graduating seniors.  Even if you haven't finished the first two components I asked you to work on this fall, you are no longer expected to complete and submit those pieces.

If you are a senior in OCEAN:

Seniors in the OCEAN program are working on virtual projects as part of a course grade.  If you are an OCEAN student, you should proceed with your project, under the direction of your OCEAN teachers.

I would like to recognize that many of you worked hard to get your proposal and research/annotated bibliography completed and submitted by the January deadline.  For those of you who weren't able to get those first pieces completed, please understand that there is no penalty to you.  We know that everyone is doing their best right now.  Your teachers and I appreciate the work that you've all put into the process.

Finally, I want to recognize and thank Sorina Johnston and Finn O'Donnell who worked with me on this process.  I miss having all of you on campus and the insight that Soso and Finn brought to my attention was the perspective I needed to understand how many of you are feeling right now.

It is my hope that the second half of year will bring additional opportunities for us to welcome students back onto campus for clubs, activities, and athletics, so we have the ability to work with you to plan some fun activities for your remaining days at PTHS.
